I shall first provide an overview of Oxford Realism, an early 20th-century school initiated by John Cook Wilson, that arguably forms a neglected chapter of analytical philosophy, with the aim of situating Ryle within that school. I shall argue that some of Cook Wilson’s ideas entered, in the early 1930s, into the particular alloy which characterizes Ryle’s philosophy; this explains why he described himself as being at the time a “fidgetty Cook Wilsonian”. I shall then focus on a passage in Ryle’s paper on Plato’s Parmenides (1939) where he discusses the third man argument (Parm. 131e-134e) and shows that he made essential use in his discussion of an argument borrowed from Cook Wilson’s on universals in Statement and Inference (1926) and, further, how the same point recurs (with a twist) in Ryle’s brief discussion of universals in ‘Systematically Misleading Expression’ (1932).
